How do I know if I can get help?

How do I get Food Stamps?
You must fill out a Food Stamp application form. You can get a Food Stamp application form from the food stamp office. Sometimes shelters, churches, and other places have Food Stamp applications available. If you take a completed application to the Food Stamp office or if you fill it out at the office, you may submit it on the same day. Click here to read more about how to apply for Food Stamps.
 
How long will it take to get Food Stamps?
If you have less than $150 in monthly gross income and not more than $100 in liquid resources (e.g., cash, checking or savings accounts, etc.), you should qualify for expedited service. This means you can receive help within 7 days. However, if your income and resources are too high for expedited service, you should receive your benefits within 30 days. Can I get food stamps if I stay at a shelter that provides meals?
Yes, if you stay at a shelter run by a nonprofit group, you can qualify for Food Stamps.

Can I get help if I do NOT have a place to cook?
Yes. You do not need to have a place to cook. Food Stamps can be used to buy many nutritious foods that can be eaten raw or unprepared like juices, milk, fruits, vegetables, canned meats and fish, cheeses, and bread.
 
Can I get help if I stay at different places?
Yes. You do NOT need a fixed address to receive Food Stamps. You may pick up your Bridge Card at the Department of Human Services or have it mailed to a shelter, church, or a friend’s house.

Can I get help if I don’t have a driver’s license or other form of identification?
Yes. If you do not have a driver’s license or a birth certificate, you may verify who you are by having someone identify you. Shelter staff can provide this information.
