Possible Funding Cut for the Michigan Agricultural Surplus System (MASS)

On Thursday, June 11, 2009, the Michigan Senate voted to cut funding for the Michigan Agricultural Surplus System (MASS).  MASS is a partnership between Michigan food banks, the agricultural community and the Michigan Department of Agriculture.  This program allows 6 million pounds of Michigan-grown produce to be collected and distributed each year to local pantries, soup kitchens and shelters.

The House of Representatives will vote on this issue in the upcoming weeks.  For more information, please visit the Center for Civil Justice website.

Recent changes to Michigan's Food Assistance Program

Food Assistance Benefit Increase
As part of the American Economic Recovery Act, Food Assistance (food stamp) recipients will receive an increase in their monthly benefit amount starting in April 2009.

Benefits will go up by 13.6 percent and all Food Assistance households will benefit from the increase.

For more information, please contact your local DHS office or call the Food and Nutrition Program Helpline at 1-800-481-4989 or 810-244-8044.

Michigan Combined Application Project (MiCAP)
MiCAP is a new program that lets SSI clients automatically receive Food Assistance benefits (food stamps) without having to visit a Department of Human Services (DHS) office - all paperwork and interviewing is done through the Social Security Administration office.

The program is available to Michigan residents who receive the full amount of SSI, have no other income, are not currently receiving Food Assistance benefits and are at least 18 years old.

For more information, please call 1-877-416-4227 or review the MiCAP Flyer.
